Harriet Harman told Labour Conference she had written to the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger to demand that he close down an adult escort review website called “PunterNet,†which allows men from the UK and around the world who buy sex the opportunity to comment on their experience with women they have slept with .
Describing the California-based adult website, which carries dozens of reviews of escorts working in London and most major cities in the United Kingdom, as “degrading,†she revealed that she had also complained to Louis Susman, the US Ambassador. She told delegates: “There is now a website … where pimps put women on sale for sex and then men who’ve bought sex with them put their comments online.
“It is ‘PunterNet’ and fuels the demand for prostitutes. This is the ultimate commodification of women. It is truly degrading and puts women at risk.
“PunterNet has pages and pages of women for sale in London. But PunterNet is based in California so I’ve raised it with the US Ambassador to London and I’ve called on California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to close it down.
“Surely it can’t be too difficult for the Terminator to terminate PunterNet and that’s what I am demanding that he does.â€
In a reference to Mr. Schwarzenegger’s catchphrase from the Terminator series of films, she joked: “And if he doesn’t, I have got a message for Arnie: I will be back.â€
During the debate on citizenship and equalities, Miss Harman also attacked The Sun newspaper, which has just switched its support from Labour to the Conservatives, for featuring topless models on its Page 3 feature – and called on delegates to “bite back†and win the next election.
She said: “I am speaking to you this morning about something The Sun knows absolutely nothing about: equality.
"The nearest their political analysis gets to women's rights is Page 3's News in Briefs.
"We are all angry about The Sun this morning but I say to you: don't get bitter, get better.
"Don't get outraged, get out there. Don't get mad, get mobilized. Yes, we may be the underdog but we will not be bullied. This underdog is biting back."
Miss Harman, who is also Labour’s deputy leader, was cheered as she stressed the Government’s record on equality, including the introduction of civil partnerships for homosexual couples, extended maternity leave, and help for carers.
She also set out new measures planned in the Equalities Bill, currently before Parliament, which would strengthen laws against racial hatred, ban age discrimination, and, for the first time, force all public bodies to tackle inequality on the grounds of class.
In a stinging attack on the financial sector where, Miss Harman said, women are paid on average 44 per cent less than male employees, the minister set out proposals for compulsory pay audits, which will force firms to reveal salary scales for staff of both sexes.
She also called on delegates to tackle the threat from the British National Party, saying that the Equality Bill would ban membership rules which exclude non-white applicants.
However, Ms Harman veered from the script to lavish praise on Army wives, promising to help soldiers’ wives while their husbands are in Afghanistan.
“The wives of our servicemen have always held things together at home. And the task has become even more difficult with the men away fighting the Taleban,†she said.
Carrie Mitchell, of the English Collective of Prostitutes, condemned the idea of forcing PunterNet to close. "Once again instead of prioritizing dealing with rape and other violence, Harman is prioritizing censorship and repression. It is women trying to support families in the recession who will be first to suffer," she said.
The question that now needs to be asked is, what would happen if Punternet was shut down, would this open the flood gates to legislate and shut down any Escort review website that has any reference to women within the United Kingdom .
SOPHIE Anderton, reality TV star and supermodel, confessed all about her shame as a £15,000-an-hour hooker and how she was plunged into the depths of UK sex Industry .
Sophie, 32 - caught by The Sun newspaper last week taking cocaine , told how she bedded a string of megarich businessmen to pay soaring drug debts.
She also claimed that the British TV and fashion industry is "awash" with girls who have fallen into vice - including two household name models.
Recalling the first time she had sex for money, she said: "It was all over in two minutes.
I lay there thinking, 'Is that it? For £15k, is that it?'" The former I'm A Celebrity star, who made her name modeling Gossard underwear, has never before fully discussed her time working as a hooker.
Sophie says there was someone out there willing to stump up the £15,000 fee to have sex with her, for a whole hour.
And there appears to be room to negotiate, because just last November, the News of The World’s fake sheikh, Mazher Mahmood, reported:
FORMER I’m A Celebrity star Sophie Anderton is a sordid DRUG-PUSHING HOOKER who charges around £10,000 a night for her adult services.
To you, Mazher, its £10,000 for an entire night; to anyone else it’s £15k for 60 minutes. And Sophie had a menu of pleasures, possible written on a tattoo:
“I’m great at sex,†Sophie bragged as she beckoned a reporter to romp with her. “I’ll be a lot of fun. I’ll look great on your f***ing arm. I’m a supermodel.â€
But she didn’t hate it that much when the reported asked her how much she would charge for a weekend sex romp in the Bahamas. “It’ll be 15 grand a day,†she said.
It’s 10k a night; £15 a day in Barbados; £15k an hour; and £15k for 120 seconds:
Recalling the first time she was paid for sex, she said: “It was all over in two minutes. I lay there thinking, ‘Is that it? For £15k, is that it?’â€
How much Sophie was paid to eat a kangaroo’s testicles on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! Is not mentioned…
Sophie, who now lives in Chelsea, West London, went on: "In 2007 I plunged to my deepest low and went back to prostitution.
"I was caught by a newspaper and it probably saved my life. I cleaned up my act over drugs.
"I've relapsed about nine times. Last week when The Sun caught me was one of them." She checked into a psychiatric unit in July after a messy break-up from her property developer boyfriend Ed Buxton.
Sophie, who also once dated soccer star Mark Bosnich, said: "It's a long, hard road to recovery.

Among heterosexuals in the United Kingdom (UK), HIV transmission can occur within networks of as many as 30 people, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit, London. Details are published September 25 in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens.
The number of HIV-infected heterosexuals in the UK has been growing dramatically and now exceeds the number of HIV-infected homosexual men. Most are immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, a group for which the pattern of virus transmission is poorly documented.
To better understand the dynamics of the heterosexual HIV epidemic within the UK, the research group, led by Professor Andrew Leigh Brown, applied the novel technique of phylodynamics, which reconstructs the pattern of viral sequence divergence in time in order to reveal the size of transmission clusters and the dynamics of transmission within them.
The team studied virus gene sequences from over 11,000 infected individuals, comprising 40% of the HIV-infected heterosexual population in the UK, making this one of the largest studies of its kind to date. By analyzing differences between the viral strains, they found clusters of related viruses that showed 5% of HIV transmissions to have occurred in networks of more than 10 people.
The authors note the importance to their work of the UK HIV Drug Resistance Database, which contains viral DNA sequence information from over 30,000 infected individuals. Using this database, the researchers discovered that transmission clusters in the heterosexual population were smaller than those found among HIV-infected homosexual men and that transmission was also much slower. The study concludes that heterosexual transmission could be significantly reduced by early diagnosis and treatment.
"The slower dynamics of the heterosexual epidemic thus offer more opportunity for successful intervention, but it is essential that diagnosis is achieved as early as possible," said Professor Leigh Brown.
According to new research far more women in the UK are consuming large amounts of alcohol before they go out for a date or out on the town in order to lower their sexual inhibitions.
Researchers recently surveyed more than 3,000 UK women between the ages of 18 and 50 and found that the average woman had slept with eight men, according to UK’s Daily Mail.
That’s not the most surprising part. What was is that researchers found the average woman claimed to have been consumed large amounts of alcohol and were either tipsy or very drunk when having sex with at least five of them. On at least two of those occasions, the survey found, the average woman could not remember her bedroom partner’s name the following morning .
The study also examined women in relationships, finding that they, too, rely on a few drinks to loosen up before getting between the sheets.
According to the study, 17% of women said they couldn’t face sleeping with their partner unless they had been drinking at least half a bottle of wine in order to make them feel calm relaxed and frisky .
One in six women admitted they did not have the confidence to sleep with someone when they were sober and relied on alcohol to kick start their sex lives.
Kathryn Lakeland, who led the study, racked up the heavy boozing to a severe lack of self confidence.
“The fact alcohol plays an integral role in their love lives shows that women are looking for a boost in self-esteem when it comes to their bedroom antics,†Lakeland told the Daily Mail. “A large percentage will actually refuse to get between the sheets without a bit of Dutch courage.â€
The study, which was carried out by Femfresh, a British cosmetics company, did not appear to address other possibilities for the outcome, such as a pre-existing drinking problem or other psychological issues that might make intimacy difficult for some women, according to the paper.
Still, researchers warned, the numbers are startling and women should not be relying on alcohol to remove their inhibitions in order to get more adventurous in bed with their lovers .
